THE Ulster Farmers Union is pressing producers to make use of initiatives that could ease the provinces income problems.
One of the key schemes targeted by the Union, is the Northern Ireland Food Promotion Initiative which has the backing of Prince Charles. Now in its second year, the initiative encourages shoppers to support the agricultural industry by making local produce their first choice when they go shopping.
The UFU has linked up with all of the major retailers, and promoted the initiative through a massive publicity campaign.
By getting retailers involved, the union aims to increase the amount of shelf space given over to local produce in shops.
A survey by the General Consumer Council in Northern Ireland showed 92% of shoppers wanted to buy local produce in local stores.
