Pure PI Holsteins shine

THE Berkshire-based Parkdown herd was the latest to take advantage of the move north for its dispersal in Cumbria last week.

The sale of Holstein and Holstein Friesians grossed £210,000, with 25 pure PI Holstein entries averaging £3235.

A keen crowd at Kirkby Thore, Penrith, kept bidding on a lively note, but it was pure Holstein cattle that produced the best trade and included the top call of 6800gns. And the PI Holstein average was three times higher than that achieved by non-PI stock.

Owners Messrs Bradley, Park Farm, Lambourn, saw the leading bid made by Keith Pattinson, Penrith, to secure the 1991-bred cow Parkdown Inspiration Monogram.

Classified Excellent-91 and Superior Status, she is out of a Jonathan dam and had given 10,531kg at 4.81% (3.35) in her second lactation. Her show record includes several county titles.

Also heading for Mr Pattinsons Ellengrove herd is her Aug 1996-born heifer calf by Cleitus taken at 4800gns.

The imported German cow Parkdown Verena, an 11,390kg daughter of Exranco Thor and out of a Tab dam, was sold milking with her third and giving 10gal a day after a New Year calving.

She had a PIN value of +£61 and made 6100gns to W and M Hutchinson and Sons for their Bowberhill herd.

Worcestershire dairy farmer Bernard Carr, owner of the Iford herd, paid the days highest price for milking heifers giving 5900gns for Parkdown Jackpot Tammy, bred out of a Ex-90 Lindy dam that had sold earlier for 4200gns.

A maternal sister, Parkdown Lindy Tammy 2nd, made 4200gns to Yorkshire breeders J G Ropner and Cos Dalesend herd.

In-calvers reached 3800gns paid by Yorkshire breeder Peter Aconley for Avondale Starbuck TT Dande. She was bred out of the 13,377kg ninth lactation Triple-Threat dam, Meadow Bridge TT Dande and was sold in-calf to Shen-Val Nv Lm Formation.

Keith Pattinson was in again at 2100gns to pay the days top bid for maiden heifers. His purchase, Parkdown Astre Tammy PI, is out of a Prelude cow that made 3500gns – one of 10 animals taken to Cheshire to add to Geoff Bloods new herd.

Astre Tammys grand-dam, the white 10,000kg Lindy Tammy 2nd, made 4200gns. She was served in October by Paulo-Bro Chevy Caprice.

The five members of the Tammy family, all descended from Whipton Rock Tammy, averaged £4158.

Eire-based auctioneer Michael Taafe sent two milking heifers to the sale from his Easthaven herd. Moralta Broker Fawn, out of the well-known Irish show cow Moralta Inspiration Fame, made 4300gns to Geoff Blood.

AVERAGES: 93 cows and calved heifers £1759; 22 served heifers £1341; 27 maiden heifers £722 and 37 calves £659. (Norton and Brooksbank)n
