SENIOR FIGURES in the domestic livestock industry are stepping up efforts to improve carcass quality identification.

The English Beef and Lamb Executive plans to organise courses to help farmers identify when animals reach their optimum classification, as well as pushing for greater automation in the process.

A successful one-day pilot has already been held at a meat plant in Bedfordshire, and there are plans to introduce further courses.

During the pilot, six farmers were guided through the appraisal of livestock and classification of carcasses.
