Officers said the burglary took place at a farm in Redhill Lane, Rubery, on the outskirts of Birmingham.

A Hereford heifer calf was taken away from its mother and five other cows and had its throat slit, while a ewe was dragged from a field from a neighbouring farm and slaughtered.

‘Killed for their meat’

A police spokesman said: “This was a sickening incident that would have undoubtedly caused a lot of suffering to the two animals.

“It is likely the animals have been killed for their meat.”

Officers are keen to speak to anyone with information or CCTV, or who saw anything suspicious in the area around the time of the attack.

Anyone who is being offered cheap meat locally is also being asked to contact police.
