Regina yields lower than average in Borders

ROBERT COWE, who farms at Chirnside in Berwickshire on a medium soil, has made a start on Regina winter barley in the Borders of Scotland.

Twelve hectares (30 acres) out of 42ha (130 acres) were combined. Weighbridge yields were about 6.9t/ha (2.8t/acre), but 8t/ha (3.25t/acre) is budgeted for as average. “This is what we expected.”

He says that they are about four days ahead of usual. Farmers in the area are just making starts. He says spring barley should be fit in two weeks and wheat in a month.
