Researchers develop smart potato
SCIENTISTS at Edinburgh University are developing the worlds first smart potato which can monitor its water and mineral intake.
The potato has been genetically-altered so that a fluorescent indicator, taken from a jellyfish, will tell farmers how much water and minerals it needs and when.
The scientists claim the “sentinel” potato could revolutionise crop growth worldwide.
The results of the research, which will not be published until the end of the year, are expected to show the technology could also be used for other crops.
