Researchers hope to unlock soils secrets
THE Natural Environment Research Council is to spend £6m trying to find out more about the science of soil.
The Soil Biodiversity Programme was launched yesterday (Wednesday) during the Edinburgh International Science Festival.
Scientists will carry out the work on 30 plots of land at Sourhope, a research farm in the Cheviot Hills.
They hope to discover more about the lives of microbes and thousands of other soil-dwelling creatures. The researchers will examine the creatures links with plant growth and their responses to pesticides and other environmental pressures.
Complementary research will then be carried out on simulated grassland.
