Rifle comes straight in to IoB approved list

CHANGES to the Institute of Brewings list of approved varieties for 1998-99 see new winter barley Rifle fully approved for the central, south-east and south-west regions and Regina fully approved for the whole of the UK.

Nickersons Frank Curtis believes Rifle is unique in becoming the first variety to go straight to full approval since the provisional category was introduced about 10 years ago.

The IoBs Mike Gutsell paints a slightly different picture, saying Rifle was considered for provisional approval last year but a decision was deferred for more micro-malting information.

Allowing its macro-malting trials to run alongside further micro trials facilitated this years decision, he says. "It certainly hasnt jumped a year."

In other changes Melanie and Angora have been removed from the list for the central, south-east and south-west regions, but Melanie remains approved in the north.
