Right-to-roam stock threat
BRITAINS livestock industry is being threatened by the increasing number of people demanding the right to roam in the countryside with their dogs, Lord Clifford of Chudleigh warned last week.
Speaking during the Lords second reading of the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Bill he warned of the infections farm animals can contract from the faeces of unwormed dogs.
One large abattoir alone with an annual throughput of 600,000 cattle and lambs had estimated its farmer suppliers lost £75,000 last year because of infected livers and carcasses. It estimated 15% of the lambs had infected livers while 47 whole carcasses had to be written off he said.
