Roughlyn sale gets underway

THE first of three sales to disperse Roughlyn Farms Molgrange herd of Holsteins was held on-farm near Chester where 255 cows averaged £571.

In all, a total of 1000 head will be sold for owner Alec Pickering who bought the herd in 1993.

The initial offering comprised the milking portion and heifers close to calving, where top call came from D J Harden, Pwllheli for Molgrange Zebo Whisper. This Zielland Zebo second calver gave 10,900kg as a heifer and had given 3514kg in the first 84 days of her second lactation.

But breeding was not everything. The days second highest bid came for a non-pedigree cow fresh with her second after a heifer note of 9900kg. She realised 1040gns to C M Stone, Ross-on-Wye.

A young cow by Cogent Lucky made 1020gns to D V Burgess, Chester. She was in-calf for July to Eastland Kangoo and had given 10,000kg with her second calf.

The third calver Molgrange Empire Whooper also made 1020gns. By Reaffy Star Empire and out of an Etazon Lancia dam, she nudged 10,000kg with her second and was bought by Knowles Bros, Woodplumpton, Preston, Lancs.

Mr Stone was in again at 1000gns to claim Molgrange Marconi Dora, a fresh second calver by Havep Marconi. Market Drayton milk producers E W Nixon and Sons paid 800gns twice for in-calf heifers by Brabant Star Patron.

Averages: 255 cows £571 and 26 in-calf heifers £708 (Wright Manley). &#42
