Roundup costs less than beer

WITH Roundup (glyphosate) herbicide "cheaper than beer" the opportunity to clean seed-beds with pre-drilling sprays is too good to be missed, says Mr Shaw.

Large quantities were applied this autumn. "We used about 4000 litres, sometimes spraying twice. It helps reduce the workload for the Lexus/Hawk mixes – we are using more as we move away from IPU because its less reliable."

Ice (flufenacet + pendimethalin) has largely replaced Avadex (tri-allate) as a first treatment. "Its a lot easier to apply – we can put it through the sprayer. And on some of our winter barley it appears to have done an adequate job on its own."
