Royal Bank warns against protectionism

PROTECTIONISM in the food sector could lead to farmers being accused of setting up trade barriers, says Ian Kenny, agriculture support manager with the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Mr Kenny, speaking at the Stoneleigh Royal Showground, Warwickshire, urged farmers to take a tough approach to improve profits, taking 5% to 7% when they could rather than expecting 20% to 30%.

He also urged older farmers to consider offering real partnership and decision making opportunities to the upcoming generations to motivate them into staying on the farm.
