RURALCOMPREHENSION

THE governments campaign to encourage people to visit the countryside after foot-and-mouth will create a big demand for information on rural issues, and this book* could fill that niche.

It offers a colourfully illustrated insight into all aspects of our rural environment and is written by Peter Prag, a consultant chartered surveyor and senior visiting fellow in the Department of Land Management at the University of Reading.

Published by Estates Gazette in association with farmers weekly and NFU Countryside, it explains how the present landscape has evolved, describing the crop, livestock and woodland work done year-round in the countryside.

The book, which has a foreword by Frederick Forsyth, also deals with conservation, access, field sports, foodstuffs, animal welfare, diversification and the Common Agricultural Policy.

Anyone who wants to know more about the working countryside and the growing pressures upon it will find answers in this book.
