SAC looks at psychology of arable farming

THE Scottish Agricultural College is carrying out research to find out the social and psychological factors that lie behind arable farming.

The study, which takes on previous research, will try to link farm practice to attitudes as well as social-class variables. Previous research showed a strong correlation between those farmers who were production-oriented, and therefore in favour of chemical use, and those who cared for the environment.

Preliminary research has found that farmers are quite conservative. Many are only willing to take risks when they are sure of the benefits of new techniques.
