Salty remedy for biting behaviour

A REDUCTION in tail and ear biting and the subsequent condemning of carcasses is the aim of a new feed block for pigs.

The Wright Herbal Pig Block is claimed to have halved the levels of tail biting and reduced ear biting by a quarter in trials at Newcastle University.

The block contains a range of herbs including hops and lemon balm which it is claimed by the manufacturers have calming properties and aid stress relief. The block is largely salt which makes it hard enough to ensure it is not consumed too quickly, say the manufacturers.

The Wright Herbal Pig Block is available as a 10kg block at a cost of £3.50 (01335-341102, fax 01335-340009).
