Scots livestock group sets out stall

SEVEN livestock farmers from the north-east who banded together last year to form a marketing unit have begun the process of selling themselves.

The Scottish Livestock Initiative on Marketing (SLIM) have formed a working group to see how their ideas can be put into practice.

One of the members of SLIM wants there to be closer links between auction marts and producer groups.

He also advocated the setting up of a national deadweight selling system controlled by farmers, marts and groups.

A representative from the National Beef Association said it would be difficult to counter supermarket power and the declining number of abattoirs.
