Scots milk study

AN investigation into difficulties and opportunities in Scotlands dairy industry has been announced by Scottish farm minister, Ross Finnie.

During a Scottish Parliament debate Mr Finnie said the Scottish Executive would fund a £50,000 industry-led study to analyse the problems, examine market needs and draw up proposals for action.

"I am well aware of the problems facing the dairy sector," Mr Finnie said. "The dairy study will be led by a steering group made up of representatives from all sectors of the industry and will be supported by SAOS, the body which promotes co-operation in (Scotlands) farming industry."

Ian Kerr, chairman of the Scottish NFU milk committee, welcomed the announcement, but stressed the need for speed. "Time is not on our side. Dairy farmers are going out of business every day," he said. &#42
