Scots plan sheep summit

ROSS FINNIE, Scottish rural affairs minister, plans to hold a summit on 16 August to consider what can be done about the sheep sector.

He said the meeting would involve the Scottish National Farmers Union, the Scottish Executive as well as meat wholesalers.

It would aim to see how domestic and export markets could be developed, Mr Finnie announced at the Turriff Show yesterday (Tuesday).

One delegate told him a problem was that too many old ewes had been retained last year because they had no value.

Another concern expressed to him at the show was the date-based export scheme for beef. He was also quizzed about milk policy.
