Scottish Milk rival claims gains
AN Ayrshire haulier who is seeking to set up a milk buying company to rival Scottish Milk claims he has secured commitments already from 10 producers.
Bob McKinnon plans to be open for business by June or July his year.
He set up Ayrshire Milk when his transport company lost a 2m-a-year contract with Scottish Milk. The loss forced him to pay off 30 drivers and sell 15 vehicles.
McKinnon is asking the Office of Fair Trading to rule whether a loyalty bonus paid by Scottish Milk is anti-competitive.
He claims producers are unwilling to switch if they stand to lose the bonus which is paid out in line with the financial performance of the co-operative.
