Scottish Milk to cut farm-gate price to 18.72p
SCOTTISH Milk confirmed it would reduce the farm-gate price per litre of milk from 1 April to 18.72p.
It effectively means a reduction of 1.15p/l, although producers can gain an extra 0.5p if they meet the producer-owned co-operatives hygiene and quality standards.
Meanwhile, Lord Sewel, Scottish agriculture minister, welcomed possible moves by the dairy sector to introduce a levy to advertise milk. But Donald McQueen, an independent industry consultant, urged caution before embarking on an advertising campaign. He said there needs to be more research on the likely benefits to farmers.
