Seed treatment rethink as bunt levels rise

MORE bunt than expected in wheat from last years harvest has prompted a re-think on seed treatments from Dalgety.

Practical preference

Until now the firm preferred Beret Gold (fludioxinil) to Sibutol (bitertanol + fuberidazole), mainly for practical reasons at seed plants. But a rise in bunt levels seen by specialists and a growing emphasis on final grain quality mean Sibutol is first choice this autumn, says national seed manager David Neale.

Differences in bunt control are "marginal", he admits. "But we see Sibutol as having the edge on performance."

Contrary to the Dalgety view, a spokesman for the Cambs-based Official Seed Testing Station says bunt levels have remained "fairly static" over the past four years.

&#8226 Treatment costs relayed in last weeks Seeds Special (p62) were Dalgety wholesale figures. The firms sample retail prices per tonne are: Baytan £82; Beret Gold £40; Ferrax £93; Fonofos £66.50; Gammasan £26.50; Raxil S £42; Sibutol £38.
