THE BSE crisis is a chance for the sheepmeat sector, said Jim Deenihan, Eires minister of state for the department of agriculture.
He was speaking at the first national sheep scab conference which was held in Tralee, Co Kerry last week.
"To capitalise on that our national flocks health status needs to be beyond question," he said. "After deregulating dipping in 1993 the scab reporting system has collapsed. We now realise the only way forward is eradication so I am in favour of introducing compulsion as well as incentives. If this issue is not led from the top it will never be resolved."
