WITH supplies of new-season lamb building steadily, producers with stubble- or root-fed hoggets are urged to market as many as possible before buyers switch over to this years crop.

Peter Crichton of Hill Farm Sheep says there is a large number of hoggets coming off roots as the grazing period closes.

Many are within the medium (42-45kg liveweight) to heavy weight ranges (over 45kg); and those in this latter weight band should be marketed as soon as possible.

When buyers switch to new season – typically near Easter (20 April) – the value of hoggets falls sharply, traditionally.

That effectively leaves three weeks before values could be hit. This weeks latest MLC price report puts the lamb SQQ at 107p/kg.
