Short on clover

UPLAND beef and sheep producers are failing to maximise the output of long-term grazing swards because average clover content is less than 5%, according to GRAS technical adviser Roger Vickers.

"Farmers should be aiming for 20% white clover in the sward, but are finding it difficult to reach this level as they are restricting clover growth by applying too much nitrogen in spring."

Mr Vickers also advises reviewing current grass and clover varieties to ensure clover establishment is encouraged.n
