Significant areas of spring barley combined

ABOUT 25% of the spring barley crop has been combined in the Scottish Borders according to Jim Lofthouse of Eildon Grain. He has also seen a few samples of winter wheat but admits, “Its the tip of the iceberg.”

Optic and Chariot are the main varieties of spring barley. “The quality is generally good although there is higher nitrogen. Weve seen nothing below 1.65%, which is standard top malting quality. There are also some split grains.”

The last half-week has given favorable conditions for Scottish farmers. He says moistures on spring barley are below 17% and 20% for wheat.

On biscuit wheat Claire and Consort, quality is reasonable. Specific weight is up to 78Kg/hl and protein about 12%. “It looks like they are going to run quite well.” Yields on the wheat crop look better than projected.
