Skinned grain poses problem
WITH spring barley about 20-25% harvested in the highlands, there is a potential problem with skinned grains, according to Simon Barry from Highland Grain near Inverness.
“We have not seen anything that could fail on nitrogen, which ranges from 1.5-1.75%, but there are a few batches with skinned grains.” The main varieties are Optic, Chalice and Decanter.
“Traders are being careful to get the good quality but farmers are worried that they are not getting the stuff off the farm as quickly as they would like to. The expected marketable surplus of spring barley in Scotland may now not be there.”
Harvest was interrupted again on Sunday and wet weather has stopped any progress since. He expects farmers to be into wheat next week.
