Small ware warning

POTATO growers are being warned not to look to small ware as an alternative to Dutch seed.

Despite fears about brown rot infection in imported seed, the illegal practice is not worth pursuing, warns Roger Turner, chief executive of the British Society of Plant Breeders.

Determined to stamp out the use of small ware, BSPB has stepped up surveillance to ensure offenders are identified and that they are taken to court.

Last autumn one Aberdeen- shire farming company was forced to pay £35,000 in legal costs after action by the BSPB.
