Snags for double-tags

ENFORCEMENT of double tagging legislation – already delayed from Jan 1 – is causing headaches for all concerned, with a growing backlog in tag supplies.

Chairman of the Approved Livestock Identification Manufacturers Association, Bob Hattersley, said members were reporting a backlog of at least six weeks in the system of allocating tag numbers. And the backlog was still growing, he added.

Some tag manufacturers were still waiting for MAFF to process number-requests that were submitted in November. As well as the sheer number of requests he estimated that 40% of applications from producers included errors, slowing the process even more.

"Frustrated producers are now beginning to swap between manufacturers and are requesting the same set of numbers causing further administrative difficulties and further delays," he added.
