Snow kills thousands of new lambs

FARMERS have been left counting the cost as thousands of newborn lambs have frozen to death in freak spring blizzards.

The Express< reports that hill farmers fought a losing battle as ewes and lambs were smothered in six-foot drifts as they huddled against walls.

South-west farmers bore the brunt of the snowstorms, with wind-chill making conditions even worse.

John Small of Warren Farm at Charterhouse in the Mendip Hills told The Daily Telegraph that more than 100 of his lambs, worth 5000, had died.

The worst weather is thought to have passed.
