Spanish success with mushrooms, asparagus

MUSHROOMS and asparagus are two of the most successful crops in Spains Ebro Valley, reports the Financial Times in a special report on the region.

Mushroom farmers on the banks of the Ebro in Calahorra formed a co-operative, Champiunion, to can their crops in 1992.

The company was producing 14,000 tonnes of canned mushrooms two years later and is currently investing almost US $2 billion in new machinery.

The centre of the asparagus agribusiness is further down the Ebro at Tudela where Ian is the worlds biggest canned asparagus producer.
