HARVEST results from National Institute of Agricultural Botany trials should be available sooner and to many more cereal and oilseed growers in future thanks to an injection of Home-Grown Cereals Authority levy cash.
New arrangements mean that 1995 data to help farmers make variety choices will be to hand before this autumns sowings. In the past growers not subscribing to NIABs Varplan scheme have had to wait for recommended list information in November.
July and mid-August
For this year Varplan will continue giving subscribers detailed yield results, along with provisional disease resistance ratings and comment from NIAB crop specialists updated as harvest proceeds. There are two issues for oilseeds in July and mid-August, and three for cereals between early August and early September.
New this year are summaries at the end of harvest for each crop, which will be issued to the media. Precise arrangements for 1996 are still being worked out, says the HGCAs Dr Chris Rawlinson. Current Varplan prices are £35 for cereals and £25 for oilseeds.
