Sportsmans ewe wins at Texel sale

TEXEL breeders preparing for the 1997 lambing season made their annual New Year visit to Chelford, Cheshire, last weekend.

The event saw 78 entries – mainly in-lamb shearlings – on offer at the North West Breeders Clubs show and sale.

Mr Robert Laird travelled from Lanarkshire to judge the event and awarded more silverware to the Sportsmans flock of Messrs Boden and Davies.

Over the years their Chelford victories with rams and females have been innumerable. This time it was with an in-lamb shearling ewe from their flock at Stockport, Cheshire, and sired by Sportsmans Appollo.

The ewe was out of a Watchill Wone dam and made the days top price of 1020gns to T G and P M Jarman, Newtown, Powys. She was in-lamb to past Royal Show champion Sportsmans Unique.

Among the other highlights was a 920gns call for the first shearling to be offered from the Sportsmans pen. This Appollo- sired ewe is in-lamb to the 28,000gns Craighead Yankee and was bought by J F Hughes, Anglesey.

AVERAGES: in-lamb ewes £141; in-lamb shearlings £206; and empty ewe hoggs £126. (Frank R Marshall and Co)
