Spreading the word…
A mesh-covered extension to the rear of an existing trailer won first prize in the Royal Bath and West Shows Farm Innovation Awards.
Built by Ed White, of Castle Cary, Somerset, it is the key to transporting fertiliser to the field in big bags and spreading it using only one tractor equipped with a foreloader and a spreader.
After pulling the trailer loaded with fertiliser to the field and parking it, the foreloader is used to move one bag to the mesh platform. After reversing the spreader underneath the platform the bag is slit and the fertiliser falls through into the spreader.
To ensure the bag empties cleanly the bag handles are hitched on the post provided. A hinged leg prevents the trailer tipping backwards. *
