Spring beans are on song

SPRING beans have had a good year, with harvest on track and yields better than average, says PGROs Geoffrey Gent.

Again new varieties are performing well. "Although it is too early to pick out any clear trends, it is obvious that Victor`s dominant position is now under threat. Some of the newer varieties appear to be 10% plus higher yielding."

With two out of seven site results available Meli, Mars and Quattro lead on 107, 106 and 105% of controls respectively, compared to Victors 90. Some of the newer types are also more resistant to downy mildew so are cheaper to grow, he says. &#42
