SQBLA scheme grows

OVER half the cattle procured by meat processor McIntosh Donald – a division of Aberdeen-based Grampian Country Foods – now come from farm assured holdings, compared with just 16% six months ago.

This rise reflects the rapid growth in the number of farmers involved in the Scotch Quality Beef and Lamb Association scheme, which has more than doubled to 6000 following a major recruitment drive in January.

Procurement director for McIntosh Donald, Eric Stephen, said the farm assurance schemes were helping the trade sell its products, though it did not mean price premiums were available.
