SSPCA pig welfare work

THE Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is to be the main funder of a £20,000 pig welfare project.

The research, to be done in Scotland, is being put out to tender by the Scottish Pig Industry Initiative. New SPII chairman, David Whiteford said the work would include farrowing crate design, welfare friendly flooring and salmonella control. Mr Whiteford, Easter Ross, is Scottish NFU pigs convener. As SPII chairman he succeeds Maitland Mackie.

Mr Mackie said big retailers were now insisting on SPII standards but not all suppliers in the UK could meet them. "We must drive home this advantage. It will be some time before the rest of the UK catches up," he said.

SPII also announced that its promotional budget for the next 12 months was being doubled to £500,000. &#42
