Stiff bidding as Suffolk ram lamb makes 10,500gns

By Jeremy Hunt

HEADING the sales sheets at the Suffolk Sheep Societys first big fixture of the season at Stoneleigh was a son of the 68,000gns Muiresk King of Diamonds.

This striking ram lamb from Aberdeenshire breeder Jimmy Douglas Cairness flock produced stiff competition and sold for 10,500gns as supreme champion under judge Mr Huw Francis.

The lamb, out of one of the flocks best ewes by Cairness Spellbound, had been a member of the winning pen of three ram lambs.

"A great lamb of upstanding type with tremendous shape and breed character," said Mr Francis, who runs the Ward flock at Ruthin, Clwyd.

The champion was bought by North Yorks breeder John Greensit as a service sire for his Holme flock, which is being dispersed in November.

The Cairness flock averaged £2945 for 10 lambs.

John Sinnett had taken the unconventional step of shearing all his ram lambs three months before the sale. Entries from his noted Stockton flock, Stock-on-Teme, Worcs were even penned on sawdust instead of straw to give buyers an "uncluttered" view of conformation and legs.

His top was 8200gns for anoutstanding lamb by Cairness Discoverer. Discoverer is by the Pankymoor Prelude-sired Kingof Diamonds and his dam isby the 26,000gns Cairness Court.

His was the highest price paid for a sire by Oxfordshire breeders Darrel and Gail Jeffries, who waited until the end of some spirited bidding before making just one call to secure him for their Dargale flock.

Stockton also achieved two top prices with sons of the privately-bought Cairness the Best.

Mrs &#42 Goldie claimed one at 4500gns for her Harpercroft flock in Ayrshire, and Herefordshire breeders L F and V A Pilliner (Stokelacey) gave 4000gns for another. Both were from the flocks second-prize winning pen of three, which grossed 16,700gns.

The Stockton average was £2776 for nine lambs.

Another great string of lambs from Muiresk brought more success for the Mair family, who took the reserve championship with the winner of the single ram lamb class. This powerful son of Muiresk Dancing Brave made 7000gns to Messrs Ainsworths Chebsey flock, Stafford. Muiresk averaged £2590 for 12 lambs.

Mr Douglas sold an ET brother to his champion for 4600gns to Leics breeders J W Hallam and S M Eggleston (Seagrave) and P A Strickland and Sons (Spittlegate) of Grantham, Lincs.

Female champion was a shearling ewe by Cairness Explosion from J Walton and Son. Alnwick. It made 2000gns to J &#42 Stewart.

AVERAGES 146 ram lambs £1259, 12 shearling rams £918 and 16 shearling ewes £371 (M Walton).

This ram lamb took the championship and made 10,500gns.
