Strawberries rot as rain puts off pickers
THOUSANDS of tonnes of ripe strawberries are going to waste because growers cannot find enough seasonal workers willing to pick them.
Pickers have been put off by the prospect of being outdoors during one of the wettest summers on record.
Conditions for growing the fruit have been ideal. Sarah Olney, who has 1.62ha (four acres) of pick-your-own fields, at Uckington, Gloucestershire, has been left with 15 tonnes of wasted fruit worth about £6,500.
Commercial producers are also suffering massive wastage.
