Strong support for HSE
ONE of the worlds strongest men, Geoff Capes, helped to launch the Health and Safety Executives leaflet Handling loads in agriculture at the Shropshire and West Midlands Show.
The leaflet describes 30 ways of reducing the risk of a lifting injury. "Whether lifting or carrying, you need common sense, the right techniques and the skills to know when and whether to use mechanised aids," said Mr Capes. "These abilities wont make you the worlds strongest man but they will help you to handle the sort of jobs I can tackle in safety."
Manual handling causes nearly 20% of all farm accidents, said chief agricultural inspector, Frank Lindsay. Of those, almost half resulted from lifting or stacking, Mr Lindsay added. *
