Suckler sufferers

SUCKLER herds offered high magnesium feed blocks suffer more hypomagnesaemia (grass staggers) than those on units feeding no supplements.

That is the result of a Northern Irish trial as reported in the Veterinary Record, Jan 13, 1996.

Researchers suggest there is likely to be wide variation between the effectiveness of commercially available blocks. They seek more research on effective magnesium supplementation methods and their interaction with other factors, such as weather conditions, stress, nitrogen and potash fertiliser inputs, on the incidence of hypomagnesaemia and clinical tetany.
