Supermarkets set global benchmark

By FWi staff

LEADING international food chains are to commit themselves to global benchmark standards for food safety, reports the Financial Times.

The 38 businesses, which include Tesco and Sainsburys from Britain, are also to set up a rapid alert system to tackle contamination alerts.

Their benchmark model will involve quality management and establishing critical control points from farm to fork.

The group, called the Global Food Safety Initiative, has been backed by manufacturers including Unilever, Nestle, Danone, General Mills and Cargill.
