Suppliers lose out
THE recent receivership of British Beef, part of Union International, which also owns Dewhurst butchers, has left cattle and lamb suppliers short of over £4m.
Now in the hands of receivers Ernst and Young, the £100m turnover company is still running its abattoirs at Hawick, Prestwick and Wakefield.
Farmers who sold to the company on a deadweight basis are owed for about three weeks delivery, and are listed as unsecured creditors. "However, those who presented stock though auction companies have already been paid," said Harry Vickers, chairman of the Northumberland and Durham branch of the Livestock Auctioneers Association.
The receivers have guaranteed that primestock supplied since the opening of business on Monday (Mar 27) will be fully paid for. *
