Support grows for calf support scheme

THE National Farmers Union and slaughterers are calling for a Government-funded voluntary calf-buying programme to be introduced if the Calf Processing Aid Scheme (CPAS) is disbanded on 30 November.

There are fears that dairy calf prices might plunge towards zero unless some aid is retained.

The Ministry of Agriculture is being asked to consider an interim support programme from 1 December, offering halfway-house conditions in which bobby calf prices would not plunge to rock-bottom levels.
