Swiss hopes raised on EU trade relationships
European Union (EU) progress on agricultural issues and the free movement of people has raised hopes in Switzerland that it is moving closer towards a bilateral trade relationship with the EU.
Switzerland has been attempting to sign a deal with the EU since December 1992. That was the date when its electorate voted to remain outside the European Economic Area.
Officials in Bern were particularly encouraged by last weeks meeting in Luxembourg of EU foreign ministers when it noted “significant progress” had been made recently on the issues of concern. Swiss officials believe the door is open for further negotiations.
