Taiwan fights foot-and-mouth

TAIWAN is bracing itself to repel the threat of foot-and-mouth disease from devastating its agriculture, according to the Financial Times.

The threat comes in the shape of smuggled imports from China where the disease is raging through herds across the country.

Taiwan has already carried out one protective slaughter last month in two regions accompanied by the vaccination of nearby herds.

Taiwans swift action is prompted by memories of the last outbreak in 1997 which led to the slaughter of 4 million pigs.
