Technical newsheet on foot-and-mouth

IN response to members calls for information about foot-and-mouth disease, the Moredun Foundation has produced a technical newsheet.

Co-author and senior Moredun virologist Hugh Reid believes there is plenty of misinformation circulating about the disease. The newsheet covers historical aspects of the disease, virus characteristics, symptoms, spread, diagnosis and control options.

Although worrying reading, Dr Reid says it provides information to direct future F&M strategies. "There needs to be a complete revision of colossal movements of animals, an increase in the number of local abattoirs and better disease surveillance by producers and vets."

Preparation for possible future outbreaks is essential. "Greater resources of specifically trained vets are needed, so they can be drafted in immediately," he adds.

Free copies of the factsheet can be downloaded at www.moredun-foundation.org.uk or send a large SAE to The Moredun Foundation, Pentlands Science Park, Penicuik EH26 0PZ. &#42
