Tesco sends in asparagus cops

TESCO has hired security guards to protect its asparagus interests because thieves are exploiting the flood chaos.

Patrols are protecting suppliers farms in the Vale of Evesham and Suffolk after Tesco discovered £500 worth of the crop had been stolen.

The thieves have been striking at the edge of the fields during early morning or at night. They have been taking advantage of the fact that the floods have made it more difficult for growers to keep a close eye on their fields.

Growers said harvesting would be delayed because of the heavy rain but the crop would not be wiped out.
