Time runs out to clear waterside

FARMERS have been warned that time is running out to cut back waterside undergrowth and hedgerows before the start of the nesting season.

The Country Landowners Association has reminded producers that vegetation on the banks of rivers, streams and ponds should not be cut between Febuary and August to avoid disturbing water birds and waders during nesting.

“And to protect the nests, eggs and young of breeding songbirds, producers should not trim or lay hedges between mid-March and the end of July,” a spokesman added.

Under the 1981 Wildlife and Countryside Act, fines of up to £5000 are possible for anyone convicted of damaging nests or eggs.
