Tractor sales up despite August drop
By Andy Collings
TRACTOR sales figures are higher than they were in 1998, despite a 30% fall in August on the same month last year.
Figures released by the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) reveal that tractor sales for August fell by 29.5% when compared with the same month in 1998.
Even so, year-to-date sales figures still show a slight rise of 8%.
There will be those who are disappointed with Augusts sales, but it is worth noting that the change in the registration procedures may have influenced sales.
Registrations now take place twice a year in March and September rather than once a year in August.
Whether farmers will choose to make their purchases this month when the new V-registration designation appears remains to be seen.
Chris Evans, AEA economist, believes tractor sales are still on course to finish this year at about 10% up on 1998, for a total of about 10,500 units.
