Training group aims to prepare for 21st century
LANTRA, a new training organisation for land-based and related industries, has been launched to prepare Britains rural workforce for the 21st century.
Chairman, Andy Stewart, said the group would promote the benefits of investing in training and education, encourage the provision of appropriate training, and develop an economic model to help predict changes in the labour market and the industrys demand for skills.
Lantra will represent a range of interests, from agriculture, fish farming and forestry through to floristry, farriery and fencing.
Welcoming the launch, junior farm minister Lord Donoughue said: "As we near the millennium, people working in the rural economy must possess the right skills and qualifications to maintain and improve the UKs competitive position.
"Therefore, we need a professional strategic organisation to represent the land-based sector and to bring together the education, training and development skills needs of both the sectors employers and employees." *
